Milepost #2


I most closely identify with “tour guide”, “individual and group mirror”, “social butterfly”, “valve control” and “co-learner” types of teaching.  I need to practice being a better learning r coach and by allowing the students to learn for themselves.  In the past, I have really hand fed the students because I am afraid that if I don’t, they will walk away from the course without the integral information!  Focus questions and discussion questions are helpful methods by which reinforce important topics.  I do always try to provide the students as much feedback as possible, as fast as I can. This might be through grades or via total points accumulated up to that point.  I attempt to stimulate a positive environment when learning in an online course.  I need to work on providing more positive feedback to the students during the course to help the students remain more positive and focused.  I do try to become familiar with each student enrolled in the course via course work, group discussions and the student introductions.  I don’t like to babysit my students.  I will reach out to a student if the student hasn’t participated in a group discussion or submitted course work.  I tend not to support the “Big Brother” ideology by checking log ins, views and usage.  My feeling is that college students should be responsible for their courses!  I do practice valve control in the form of “modules”.  I post all of the information at the inception of the class and direct the students to focus on a certain module of work for the week.  This helps the students stay focused on what is important for the class session, while allowing students who prefer to work ahead to do so.  I do support the “co-learner” ideology.  I try and direct the students during discussion with focus questions or try to bring about a different point of view during class activities. If students seem misdirected or lacking responses, I will try and redirect with specific questions or comments.
