about me
Auditor in the "Over 60" or "Lifelong Learning" Program on the SUNY Old Westbury Campus.

Interests include:

1) Understanding how to integrate distance learning with project based course material.

Context: My understanding is that SUNY Old Westbury (founded 1965) was modeled after Evergreen State College, offering "non-traditional" curricula that leading to a 4 year arts/science bachelor's degree.

The SUNY Old Westbury Community Action, Learning & Leadership Program (CALL) affords students, faculty and staff opportunities to make meaningful contributions to local communities through project based work with partner-organizations.

I am interested in learning whether/how persons enrolled in the Over 60 program might benefit students by assisting the CALL program as volunteers acting as mentors, working with faculty and administration to develop tools that assist community projects, or using their relationships in their community to develop or enrich relationships with partner organizations or work with faculty/partner organizations and students in project development/community-needs assessment.

When the time is right I hope the SUNY Old Westbury Over 60 program will become a "go-to" organization for idealistic people who strongly support public higher-education and want meaningful opportunities to put their skills, etc. to use.

I also hope that with a critical nucleus it might be possible to develop web-delivered tools that could enable faculty, administrator and partner organizations to enhance the student experience and lower administrative overhead for all concerned.

A "concept-piece" page re recruiting for Lifelong Learning:

2) A general interest in learning (at an educable amateur's level) about assessment methodologies.

Context: Assumption is that for certain subjects and certain students, distance learning is very effective, for other subjects, and for some students, distance learning is less effective.

As someone who believes that close relationships with faculty/administrators can make a huge difference in some students lives, I am very interested in understanding how distance learning tools assessment can lead to early-on
"realtime" identification of situations where distance learners educational experience will be greatly enhanced by personal interactions.

3. A general interest in understanding issues related to Open SUNY and campus autonomy.

Context: I'm fascinated by how a project of the scale of Open SUNY has been and is being designed. Assumption is that a lot of thought has gone into ways that will take advantage of the cost-efficiencies and quality-of-service benefits that should come from platform uniformities while maintaining opportunities for experimentation by individual campuses on both the course/substance level and on platform-open-ness and platform-flexibility.

Three tall orders I suspect.
